Music composition for a short film by Kotryna Pridotkaitė

WHERE THE FOREST SPRINGS

Kotryna approached me asking if I could compose a piece for her fashion photography project's Where the Forest Spring behind-the-scenes film with one rule. She wanted me to create a piece played on the Baltic traditional instrument known as kokle in Latvian, kanklės in Lithuanian and kannel in Estonian. After seeing the first rough cut, I jumped at the opportunity. I felt like this was right up my alley. At the time, I had owned and started learning this instrument for a month. But I am a strong believer of trying new things and messing around, experimenting. By not knowing how to do something, we are all capable of creating something unique.

Besides, Kotryna's voice, videoclips and text really spoke to me. I felt the homesickness, the comfort of her motherland that she is seeking, the Baltic sea, the food, people - home. By using a traditional instrument, a bond between the musician and home is secured. So I tried to channel it, bring it to the sonic musical realm, through the sharp string notes, the continuing ascending melodic lines, the repetitive cycle of sinking deep into that crushing yearning feeling.
